quote…Concerning the Work of Kim Pieters , by Carl A. Mears.”…essay
Kim Pieters (1959) lives and works in Dunedin, New Zealand. Her artistic practice could be described as emergent, adaptive & nonlinear. She is predominantly a nonrepresentational painter but also produces photographs, experimental film, writing and music from her Dunedin studio. Pieters has a tendency to build her work, no matter what genre, around two or more distinct nuclei, (eg image & text) using the juxtaposition of these autonomous yet resonant realms to create a disjunction. This disjunction allows us a rare opportunity as individual viewers the freedom to think and feel something new for ourselves. Inherent in this is an ethical dimension involved in the responsibilities we do or do not nurture toward the gathering of our own thought. Her work is represented in private and public collections including the Chartwell Collection, Auckland Art Gallery, Toi O Tamaki, Christchurch Art Gallery, Te Puna O Waiwhetu, Victoria University Collection and the Dunedin Public Art Gallery etc etc
