…Together, Masson and I discovered Paul Klee, a discovery that was very important for both of us. Initially through reproductions, in a big bookshop in the boulevard Raspail. Later in a little gallery at the corner of rue Vavin, the proprietor of which used to go every so often to see Klee and brought back some watercolours from his trips. Éluard et Crevel were also interested in Klee, they even went to see him. Breton had no time for him…

….Rue Blomet was such a decisive place, a decisive moment for me. It was there that I discovered all that I am, all that I would become. Robert Desnos had yet made the Bal Nègre famous. Rue Blomet belonged to the ordinary people of Paris. At number 45 you went along a corridor, past the concierge’s lodge and into a courtyard, where there was a lilac and a few modest studios. Masson’s and mine were next door to each other. Next door was a mechanic’s workshop that made a hellish noise and the studio of an academic sculptor who had a beard and a frock coat and made great plaster models for generals and important people of the republic. We were on good terms with him, as good neighbours, as fellow artists…
