…At the rue Blomet, we took up a position favouring painting. So it was that Masson liked Derain and expected great things of him. Not me. I preferred Matisse. But we shared the same admiration for De Chirico, whose pictures we could see at Paul Guillaume’s and for the douanier Rousseau, who’s ‘Bohémienne’, which Masson had told me Kahnweiler had, I remember, affected me greatly…

…We used to listen to music (which was suspected by the Surrealists) and we used to read a lot at rue Blomet. Salacrou, who was already living in the area and writing plays, read and translated Byron’s poetry. Roland Tual, who wrote in secret and would not publish, had a splendid actor’s reading voice. Lambour read Saint Pol Roux and Jarry; I remember the strong impression that his recital of the ‘Supermale’ made on me. We also read Rimbaud and Lautréamont, Dostoyevsky and Nietszche, about whom both Masson and Leiris were fanatical…
